The people of Dallas deserve respect, compassion, and protection under the law by the public servants of this city. The lack of honest and upright response to the case of DyNell Lane reveals a complete lack of accountability or decency on the part of the Dallas Police Department (DPD). An organization dedicated to public safety would have zero tolerance for the flagrant disregard for Texas’ state equal access laws protecting disability rights, and especially for the hateful attitude the four officers involved displayed towards a resident in need.

Due to being wounded serving in combat, DyNell Lane suffers from a disability which requires him to have access to restrooms. Under Ally’s Law, he is guaranteed this right. When he needed help accessing a restroom in Deep Ellum, and provided information about his disability, the officers refused to uphold the law and help him. In desperation, Mr. Lane called DPD in the hopes that newly dispatched officers may help, but due to how long this ordeal went on, Mr. Lane soiled himself. The officers who arrived late cared just as little as the two who were already there, and all four of them were caught laughing and joking at Mr. Lane’s expense for the humiliation they caused him.

The written reprimands and mandated sensitivity training DPD issued for the officers involved is merely lip service to acknowledge that a wrong was committed, but no functional organization in any field would accept employees treating someone in need this way. Officers wielding lethal force should be held to a higher standard, not to the absolute lowest. DyNell Lane, the victim in this case, has rightfully expressed that officers like this should have no place on the Dallas police force, if they sincerely exist to protect and serve the people of Dallas.

DyNell Lane, along with the undersigned community organizations, strongly believes these officers should have their employment with the city immediately terminated for their behavior. The Community Police Oversight Board (CPOB) shares our concerns and has invoked Ordinance 37-32(a)(6). This ordinance empowers the CPOB to request your intervention in reviewing disciplinary actions. We urge you to take this request seriously and conduct a thorough review of the case.

We demand that you use your authority to ensure a just resolution for Mr. Lane and send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated within the Dallas Police Department.

The string of 'Cop City' projects across the country have not actually been initiated in response to the needs of the people and public safety. The worsening failures of our government to carry out the will of the people has led to large-scale protests gaining frequency as the last resort for democratic engagement, so these mass-training facilities have been pushed to prepare for violent repression of our movements rather than addressing what the people want and need.

In Dallas, a new police training academy facility is planned for construction on UNT Dallas’ campus in city council District 8—a district of predominantly Black and Latine neighborhoods. Construction is projected to start in 2025 costing over $140 million. This project has already secured $30 million in funding, and this May, city of Dallas residents will vote on whether $50 million should fund this Cop City under Proposition F of the city’s bond package.

🚨 DALLAS! EMERGENCY ACTION FRIDAY: Last night, the Israeli military’s genocidal assault targeted Rafah, the city that holds more than 1.4 million Palestinians, the majority of whom were displaced from elsewhere in Gaza. Over 70 martyrs and over 230 injured have already been reported in the US-funded Israeli strikes targeting homes, and mosques where many were sheltering.

Israel is threatening a ground invasion in Rafah. We call on our community to take the streets to defend Rafah, Gaza, and all of Palestine. We assert that Rafah is a red line and we must mobilize to demand an end to this genocidal assault. HANDS OFF RAFAH NOW!

The people of Gaza are calling on us, and it is our duty to heed their call. We will not allow our brothers and sisters to die silently, and we will not allow disgusting, genocide-profiteers to exist in our cities peacefully. Raytheon supplies the IOF with ASM missiles for their F-16 jets, cluster bombs, and bunker busters, as well as manufactures engines for its F-15 and F-16 fighter jets. • Sara Tayiba — Sara Mahmoud is a Palestinian community organizer born and raised in Duval County, Florida. In 2017, in the wake of the Jax 5, where 5 protestors were brutalized after protesting against the US war on Syria, Sara took part in the founding of the Jacksonville Community Action Committee (JCAC). By that summer, Sara became a member of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO). To this day, Sara takes an active role not only in organizing for Palestinian liberation but liberation for all oppressed and working-class communities in our lifetime.
• Nidaa Lafi — Nidaa is an organizer with the Palestinian Youth Movement. Prior to her graduation in May 2023, she organized with the Students for Justice in Palestine at UT Dallas for three years. Nidaa was one of the 13 detainees at the Genocide Joe protest a few weeks ago and is currently pursuing legal action against the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office for violating her civil rights while in detention.
• Laura Rodriguez — Laura Rodriguez is one of the Tampa 5 protestors arrested on May 6th at the University of South Florida. They are a Puerto Rican community organizer with the Tampa Bay Community Action Committee and began organizing during the George Floyd Rebellion. They attended the protest on their day off from work to stand in solidarity with SDS against the attacks on higher education, black education and diversity. She firmly stands in opposition to the attacks and to the false charges. Laura was formerly a student organizer with SDS and is a militant fight for the liberation of all oppressed people.
• Sуԁոеу Lօvіոg — NAARPR Co-chair and longtime activist going back to when she was a student organizing with Decolonize Media Collective, which led the campaign to force the university's divestment from the private prison industry, and organized with BLM 413 and Out Now in Springfield, MA (2014-2017). She works as a kindergarten teacher.
